Ablation

 
Fused silica, above 1600°C and certain condition of pressure, undergoes sublimation which is an endothermic transformation. This behavior allows Quartzel products to be a material of choice for ablative applications. Quartzel products are integrated into a polymer matrix and this composite material, when exposed to high thermal loads, behave like a sacrificial insulating layer for spacecrafts' engines during lift-off or spacecrafts' structural thermal protective systems.
